Deltic Is Smoking

I got tired of waiting for RSDL to add exhaust smoke to the KRS Class 55 Deltic engines. So I did it myself.

DSmok_v1.zip will be found in the Train-Sim.com KRS library, just uploaded today.

This is a regular KRS .rpk installer and replaces the class55.bin file for both the blue and green Deltic. It also adds a new particle definition file for the smoke.

The readme file contains detailed descriptions of the modifications which can be used to modify any added downloaded Deltic engines that do not already have exhaust smoke.

Just a note: The file was initially added to the MSTS list at Train-Sim, so if you can't find it look in newest files list. I've sent an e-mail to Nels to put the file in the RailSim list.

At the Train-Sim forum I discussed the smoke color issue. I may or may not change the smoke color. I didn't like white smoke at all, it looked too much like a steam engine. Anyway it's often hard to see the smoke at all whatever color it is unless you have much too large a volume of smoke which is then not realistic at all under most conditions.

I know nothing about yank

I know nothing about yank diesels and only what i have read about the Deltics.

As far as i know the leaking crankcase problem, was short lived in service and rectified.

Thank god we never had them on the WR, as they are over rated and ugly buggers. :O)

Smoke Color

The GP_38, SD-40 and SD-45 are also all 2-stroke diesels and do not ordinarily produce white smoke. In ordinary running they produce a medium to dark gray smoke. They can produce white smoke but that is unusual.

The Deltic can produce large volumes of white smoke but this is due to its peculiar design which allows crankcase oil to leak into (one of) the cylinders. I've read that oil also leaks into the exhaust and intake manifold as well. The large volumes of white smoke are usually only produced at start-up or shortly after start-up during initial full throttle application. In ordinary running the Deltic produces medium to dark gray smoke even during throttle surge. There are many videos showing this effect.

Nevertheless, I will consider a modified white smoke color definition file for users that would prefer a non-typical iconic Deltic. You may read that as meaning "mythical". My installed files allow for this modification without affecting any other engine. In RailSim, if there was smoke volume and smoke color control relative to throttle position there could be better modeling of the smoke. But since the smoke can only be modeled statically I had to decide on smoke that was average in appearance and not so much smoke that it is distracting.

I don't intend my comments to be in any way disrespectful, it's just really difficult to decide just how much smoke to make and what color to use without looking perfectly unrealistic in ordinary running.

As the Napier Deltic power

As the Napier Deltic power units are 2 stroke diesel engines, the smoke should be more of a light grey or even white colour.
